Can Weather Changes Cause Dry Eye

If you live in a place with changes in weather, chances are you’ve experienced dry eye. Whether it’s the windy winter or the sunny summer, dry eye can be a real pain (literally). But what causes this condition?

The Link Between Weather and Dry Eye

Did you know that the weather can have an impact on your dry eye? There are some studies that suggest that certain weather conditions may make symptoms worse.

For example, one study found that people with dry eye were more likely to experience symptoms during periods of low humidity. Another study found that people with dry eye were more likely to experience symptoms during periods of high wind speed.

While the exact connection between weather and dry eye is not clear, it is thought that changes in temperature and humidity may affect the tear film, which can lead to symptoms of dry eye. If you notice that your symptoms seem to be worse on days when the weather is bad, you may want to talk to your doctor about ways to help relieve your symptoms.

Guide to how Different Weather Conditions can Affect Dry Eye

Hot weather: Hot weather can cause the eyes to sweat and produce less tears. This can lead to increased irritation and inflammation of the eyes.

Cold weather: Cold weather can cause the tears to evaporate more quickly, leading to dry eyes. It can also cause the blood vessels in the eyes to constrict, which reduces blood flow and produces redness.

Windy weather: Windy weather can cause the tears to evaporate more quickly, leading to dry eyes. In addition, windblown dust or sand particles can irritate the eyes and lead to further discomfort.

Humid weather: Humid weather can help to keep the eyes moist by providing extra moisture in the air. However, if the humidity is too low your eyes can become drier and more irritable.
